Project Overview

Texas and the ERCOT grid are facing unprecedented energy demand. For example, as 2023’s summer heat waves triggered record demand for electricity, Plus Power’s existing 100-megawatt Gambit Energy Storage facility in Angleton, Texas repeatedly provided energy and ancillary grid services (such as regulation up and down, contingency reserve, and frequency response) to help grid operators stabilize the power system and avert a blackout.

Ebony Energy Storage (Ebony) is a 200 MW / 400 MWh state-of-the-art battery energy storage system providing clean, firm capacity to the ERCOT electricity system. It is ideally located on roughly 13 acres of land near San Antonio, Texas, where it will interconnect near critical transmission infrastructure, adjacent to CPS’s Green Mountain 138kV substation. Ebony Energy Storage is a fast, flexible-dispatch resource that will help the region improve grid reliability during hot summer days and cold winter storms.

Ebony will enhance grid reliability by drawing and storing energy from the grid during off-peak periods and releasing it back to the grid when energy demand is at its highest. The battery will participate in the marketplace as a “merchant project,” competing with all other generation sources to provide the lowest cost for ratepayers.

The facility’s position near high electricity demand in the region and flexibility to perform additional grid services will help make the grid more efficient for Comal County and the overall ERCOT transmission grid. Modernizing the grid to improve resilience in turn improves quality of life and regional economic development, enhancing prosperity for the community and Texas.
